As a health coach, I am all for getting your vitamins and nutrients from real, whole foods. But as a busy human being, I am also about convenience. Therefore it’s not uncommon to see me grabbing a protein bar out of my bag between appointments. I have tried hundreds of protein bars over the years. Some delicious and some so disgusting that they got thrown out after one bite. Some super healthy, and some that were more like a protein packed candy bar. With all of these different bars on the market, I realize just how confusing it can be. So I decided to make a list of my top five healthy protein bars:
#5 Quest
Quest protein bars are probably one of the most popular bars on the market. There’s no doubt that they are delicious. I mean they come in flavors like chocolate chip cookie dough, cookies & cream, and apple pie. Each bar has around 20g of protein and is less than 200 calories. You can also find them in many of your local grocery stores.
#4 Oatmega bars
Oatmega bars are another bar that I first found at Target (I’m sensing a trend here…). I really loved the fact that they contain omega-3’s, which is an essential fatty acid that is seriously lacking in most people’s diets. Plus they are made from grass-fed whey and are non-GMO. Therefore these bars are something you can feel good about eating. The chocolate peanut butter flavor is my favorite, but I actually haven’t found one that I haven’t liked.
#3 Go Macro Bars
Go Macro Bars are one of the most underrated bar on the market. I first heard of them on Instagram, bu
t am now seeing them pop up in local stores like Wegmans. According to their website, the bars are “cold-pressed, nut-butter based nutrition bars that offer a chewy and filling experience. Made from simple, clean ingredients, all MacroBars™ are certified vegan, gluten-free, organic, R.A.W., C.L.E.A.N., kosher and non-GMO project verified”. These bars are also extremely delicious! The peanut butter chocolate chip flavor is my favorite!
#2 Built Bars
Built Bars are a more recent find for me and I’m completely obsessed! In my opinion, they have the best texture out of every other protein bar. They are all coated in real chocolate (either dark or milk) and they have a gooey center that has a similar texture to caramel. They have so many delicious flavors and even have some that are nut free. Most of their bars are only 110 calories with 15g of protein, and some are a bit higher at 170 calories with 20g of protein (the peanut butter flavor). My favorite flavors are Orange Chocolate Creme and Raspberry Chocolate Creme. #1 RX Bar
RX bars have become my favorite protein bar lately. No other bar out there has
an ingredient list that short. These bars are a whole food protein bar made with real ingredients. They use things like almonds, egg whites, and dates. They come in a variety of delicious flavors, but the chocolate sea salt flavor will always have my heart.
There you have it! Don’t let the protein bar aisle confuse you. You can select one of the 5 bars above and snack happy knowing that you’ve made a nutritious and delicious choice!
Do you know of any options that don’t use tree nuts, peanuts (or any legume), soy, dairy, etc.? I seem to be allergic to everything that is included in most protein bars. I’m stuck getting most of my protein from either eggs or chicken.
Unfortunately that is going to be really hard to find. Have you tried making your own? I would recommend doing something like my protein ball recipe here: https://everydaywellnesswithmorgan.com/chocolate-peanut-butter-protein-balls/
Just use your favorite plant-based protein powder, and then use sunflower butter instead of the peanut butter. They are delicious and keep well in the fridge.
