At home workout videos have been around for years. What used to just be aerobics for women, has grown into something much bigger. Now there are fitness DVDs for all different types of workouts, for both men and woman, and for all ages and fitness levels! With so many things to choose from, I wanted to compile a list of the 12 best fitness DVDs to keep on hand. I’ve divided it up into 3 categories: cardio, strength, and mind/body.
Cardio
Zumba Fitness is the perfect form of cardio for anybody who likes to dance! You can get in a high intensity, sweaty workout all while having fun!
Although I’m not the biggest fan of the show Biggest Loser, I have to admit I like this fitness DVD. I love this workout because it is broken down into levels 1, 2, and 3. This means that you can continue to challenge yourself as you get stronger, without needing to buy a different workout DVD.
If you’re looking for a high intensity, challenging workout in just 20 minutes, then try Insanity Fast & Furious. You want to die 10 minutes into it, but then you realize you are already half way done! This workout includes lots of full body, plyometric movements, and is not for anybody with knee injuries. And the best part? There’s no equipment needed!
4. Fat Burning Cardio Kickboxing
This 60-minute workout is guaranteed to make you sweat! This workout is “designed to strengthen and condition your entire body, while providing health benefits, such as major fat burning, improving flexibility, balance, focus, coordination, stamina, muscle tone and stress relief.” And if that wasn’t good enough already, it doesn’t require any equipment or include any floor work!
Strength
Just like the Cardio Max DVD, this one is broken down into 3 different levels. You start out with Level One, and then as you get stronger you use level 2 and 3 as additional 10 minute “add ons”. This is a great way to continue to challenge yourself. The only equipment you will need is a pair of dumbbells.
6. Personal Training with Jackie: Power Circuit Training
This is a wonderful at-home weight lifting DVD for women. The moves aren’t overly complicated, but they make sure to hit every major muscle group in a shorter amount of time. This DVD also includes a separate “abs only” workout, as well as separate upper and lower body DVDs for the days that you need something a bit shorter.
7. P90X
Although more expensive then the other DVDs on this list, P90X is worth the hype. It contains 12 different workouts that all have a different focus. Ranging from heavy strength training, all the way to plyometrics and to yoga. This tried and true workout will get you the results you want if you stick with it.
8. Body Beast
Although this DVD set is mostly marketed towards men, I love it for women as well. It is a wonderful strength training program that is geared towards putting on muscle and size. It uses a lot of old school exercises that have been proven to work over time. I personally found the host a bit annoying (he’s your typical “meat head” gym guy), however I thoroughly enjoyed these workouts.
Mind/Body
As the name suggests, this is a wonderful introduction to yoga. It includes 8 different yoga routines that range from 10 minutes all the way to 60 minutes. So no matter how much time you have, you can fit in a great yoga session!
10. Pilates for Beginners & Beyond
This set of DVDs contains everything you need to have a great Pilates workout at home! It comes with three separate DVDs: Pilates for Inflexible People, Pilates Complete for Weight Loss, and Pilates Complete Sculpt and Tone. The workouts range from 15 to 60 minutes.
11. Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown
This DVD is great for the more advance yogi who is looking to take their yoga practice up a notch and burn some additional calories. This is not a typically relaxing yoga class, but instead it takes basic yoga poses and adds motion and repetition. This DVD contains two 30-minute workouts.
12. Element: Barre Conditioning
Barre is a wonderful low impact, toning workout. This DVD is designed to tone your glutes, thighs and core and give you more of a dancers body (think strong and lean).
So the next time you are in need of a great workout at home, try one of the DVDs above. As always, please consult with your physician before starting any exercise program to make sure it is appropriate and safe for you.
